Welcome to a Watery Wonderland!

Imagine a super long, narrow lake that reaches all the way to the ocean! That's Milford Sound, or Piopiotahi in the Maori language. It's a fiord, which is like a giant valley carved by ice a super long time ago.

It's surrounded by tall, steep mountains that look like they're guarding a secret. Waterfalls splash down from high up, making the air feel misty and fresh. It's a truly breathtaking place in New Zealand!

How This Amazing Place Was Made

Long, long ago, huge rivers of ice, called glaciers, slowly moved across the land. These glaciers were like giant bulldozers, scraping and carving out a deep valley. When the ice melted, the ocean water rushed in, filling up the valley to create Milford Sound.

The steep sides of the fiord are like the walls of a giant, natural swimming pool. It took thousands of years for the ice to shape this incredible landscape!

Why Milford Sound is So Special

Milford Sound is famous for its incredible beauty and the amazing wildlife that lives there. You might see playful dolphins leaping in the water or seals lounging on the rocks. The tall cliffs are covered in green trees, and when it rains (which happens a lot!), hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear, tumbling down the sides.

It's a place that makes you feel small and amazed by nature's power and beauty.

Adventures in the Fiord!

People love to visit Milford Sound to go on boat trips and see the fiord up close. You can cruise past the giant cliffs and feel the spray from the waterfalls. Sometimes, you can even spot penguins swimming in the cool water! It's a popular spot for kayaking too, letting you paddle right up to the waterfalls. It's a fantastic place for exploring and seeing nature at its most dramatic.
