Mark David Chapman

Mark David Chapman is a man who did something very sad and wrong. On December 8, 1980, he took the life of a very famous musician named John Lennon. John Lennon was part of a super popular band called The Beatles.

Chapman shot John Lennon right outside his home in New York City. He didn't try to run away after he did it. He just stayed there until the police arrived.

This event made many people very sad all around the world.

Before this happened, Mark Chapman was actually a fan of John Lennon and The Beatles! But as he got older, he started to feel angry about some things John Lennon said and the way he lived. He also read a book called 'The Catcher in the Rye' a lot and thought he wanted to be like the main character.

He even thought about hurting other famous people too. It's hard to understand why he felt so angry, but it led him to make a terrible choice.

Imagine a famous musician coming home to his apartment building. That's what John Lennon was doing. As he walked into the building's archway, Chapman was waiting.

He had a special kind of gun. He fired five shots, and sadly, John Lennon was hit four times. He was rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.

The police came and found Chapman right there, waiting for them. It was a very shocking moment for everyone.

Chapman was arrested and went to court. He said he believed God wanted him to do it, and he pleaded guilty. He was sent to prison for a very long time, from 20 years up to his whole life.

He said later that he was very sorry for what he did. He didn't want people to think he did it to become famous. He has been in prison for many, many years and has asked to be let out, but he hasn't been able to leave yet.
