Who Was LBJ?

Lyndon B. Johnson, or LBJ for short, was the 36th president of the United States. He was born in Texas a long, long time ago, on August 27, 1908.

Imagine a president who was once a teacher! LBJ started his career helping kids learn before he decided to help run the country. He became president suddenly in 1963 after President John F.

Kennedy passed away. LBJ was a big personality with a booming voice, and he loved to get things done!

LBJ's Big Plans for America!

LBJ had a super exciting idea called the 'Great Society.' He wanted to make America a place where everyone had a fair chance. He worked hard to make sure people had good healthcare, like doctors and hospitals they could afford. He also wanted everyone to get a good education, so he helped create programs for student loans.

LBJ believed that no one should be poor and hungry, so he started a 'War on Poverty' to help families in need.

Fighting for Fairness!

A really important part of LBJ's Great Society was making sure everyone was treated equally. He signed laws that made it illegal to treat people unfairly because of their skin color. These laws were called the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.

This meant that all Americans, no matter who they were, had the right to vote and be treated with respect. LBJ’s actions helped change America to be a fairer country for all its people.

Did You Know?

LBJ loved his Texas ranch so much that he called it the 'Texas White House'! He even had a special amphibious car called the Amphicar that he loved to surprise guests with. He would drive them downhill towards a lake, yelling that the brakes had failed, before splashing right into the water! It was his way of showing how much he loved his home and having fun.
