Ludwig Guttmann

Imagine a super smart doctor named Ludwig Guttmann. He was born a long, long time ago in a country called Germany. Dr. Guttmann was a neurologist, which means he was an expert on brains and nerves! He believed that playing sports could help people who had injuries and couldn't move around easily. He wanted everyone, no matter their challenges, to have fun and be strong through sports.

When Dr. Guttmann was a grown-up doctor, things in Germany became very scary for people like him because he was Jewish. He had to leave his home and move to England just before a big war started.

In England, he continued his important work. He started a special sports event for people who used wheelchairs. This event was called the Stoke Mandeville Games.

It was like a mini-Olympics for these athletes!

Dr. Guttmann's Stoke Mandeville Games were so successful and inspiring! They grew bigger and bigger. Athletes from different countries started to join. This amazing event eventually grew into the incredible Paralympic Games we know today! It's a huge international competition where athletes with disabilities show their amazing skills and determination. It all started with one doctor's big idea.
