Luddite's delight

Key Facts
Who Were the Luddites?
A long time ago, in England, there were workers who made clothes by hand. They were called Luddites. They didn't like new machines that were invented to make clothes faster. They worried these machines would take away their jobs and make them have less money. So, they decided to break the machines! It was like a protest, but with a lot of smashing.
Ned Ludd's Secret Club
The Luddites had a secret leader named Ned Ludd. Well, maybe he wasn't a real person! The Luddites used his name as a pretend name when they wrote angry letters to the people who owned the big factories. They would say, 'Ned Ludd is watching!' to scare them. It was a bit like a secret code to show they were serious about their complaints.
Smashing the Machines!
The Luddites would sneak out at night and go to the factories. They would break the new machines with hammers and other tools. They thought by destroying the machines, they could save their jobs. Sometimes, they would even set fire to the factories! It was a very dramatic way to show they were unhappy with the changes happening around them.
Why We Still Talk About Them
Even though the Luddites are from a long time ago, we still use their name today! If someone doesn't like new technology, like a new phone or computer, people might call them a 'Luddite'. It means they are against new inventions. It reminds us that sometimes, when new things come along, people have worries about how it will change their lives.
