Key Facts
Meet the Giant Lake!
Lough Neagh is a super-duper big freshwater lake in Northern Ireland. It's the biggest lake in all of Ireland and even the British Isles! It's so wide, it's like having a giant playground that's 19 miles long. That's longer than 19 school buses lined up end-to-end! It's also 9 miles wide, which is like 9 football fields across. This huge lake is home to lots of fish and birds.
Where Does All That Water Come From?
This giant lake gets its water from lots of rivers that flow into it, like the Upper River Bann and the Blackwater. Think of them as big straws sucking water into the lake! Then, one river, the Lower Bann, carries some of the water away. There are even a few small islands in the lake, like little green hats floating on the water. These islands are perfect spots for birds to rest.
A Lake That Helps Everyone!
Did you know Lough Neagh is like a giant water bottle for Northern Ireland? It gives 40.7% of the water that people drink every day! That's almost half of all the water used by everyone there. So, when you turn on the tap, some of that water might have once been in this amazing lake. It's a very important place for keeping everyone hydrated and happy.
A Lake with a Special Name!
The name 'Lough Neagh' sounds interesting, right? It comes from an old language called Irish. The Irish name is 'Loch nEachach', which means 'Eachaidh's lake'. So, a long, long time ago, a person named Eachaidh might have owned or loved this lake very much. It's like having a special name that tells a story about who it belongs to.
