Longbow

A longbow is a very tall bow, often as tall as a grown-up! It's called a 'longbow' because it's so long. People used these amazing bows a super long time ago for hunting animals and for battles. They were made from strong wood, like yew or elm trees. Think of it like a giant, wooden slingshot, but much more powerful and used with arrows!

What made longbows so special was how far they could shoot arrows. Because the bow was so tall, you could pull the string back a long way. This gave the arrow lots of energy to fly super fast and super far. Imagine pulling back a rubber band that's as tall as you are – that's kind of what it was like! This made them very useful for hunting and for protecting places.

Long ago, people made longbows from just one piece of wood. They had to find the perfect tree and shape it just right. The best wood for longbows was often yew, which is very strong and springy.

If they couldn't find yew, they used another kind of tree called wych elm. Today, people can make longbows using new materials or by gluing different kinds of wood together, but the old ways were pretty amazing!

Longbows have been around for a very, very long time, even before castles were built! People in Europe used them for thousands of years. They were especially famous for being used in big battles a long time ago. Imagine an army with lots of people shooting arrows from these tall bows – it must have looked incredible and been very powerful!
