Key Facts
Meet the Wiggly Wonders!
Imagine a creature with scales that shimmer like tiny jewels! That's a lizard! Most lizards have four legs and a long tail that can sometimes detach to help them escape from danger.
They are cold-blooded, which means they need the sun to warm them up, just like you need a cozy blanket on a chilly day. There are so many different kinds of lizards, from tiny ones smaller than your finger to giants as long as a car!
Where Do Lizards Hang Out?
Lizards love warm places! You can find them all over the world, except in very cold spots like the North and South Poles. Many live in sunny deserts, where they can bask on rocks.
Others prefer lush forests, hiding among the leaves, or even near water, like in swamps. Some brave lizards even live in our backyards, scurrying under bushes or along garden walls. They are super adaptable and find homes in all sorts of exciting environments.
What's for Lunch?
Most lizards are super eaters of creepy crawlies! They love to munch on insects like ants, beetles, and grasshoppers. Some bigger lizards might even eat smaller animals, like mice or other lizards. A few special lizards are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants, like leaves and fruits. It all depends on the type of lizard and what yummy food is available in their home.
Lizard Superpowers!
Did you know some lizards can run so fast they look like a blur? Others can climb up walls and even upside down using special sticky toes! The chameleon is famous for changing its skin color to hide from predators or to talk to other chameleons. And some lizards, like the frilled lizard, can puff up their necks to look big and scary when they feel threatened. How cool is that?!
