Cold!

Brrr! Cold is when things get super chilly, making the tiny bits inside them move super slow!

Key Facts

Temperature Measurement
Cold is measured using thermometers in degrees Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Kelvin.
Particle Movement
When things are cold, the tiny particles inside them move much slower.
Absolute Zero
The coldest possible temperature is called absolute zero, where particles almost stop moving.
Subjective Feeling
How cold we feel can depend on things like wind and how we are dressed.

What's the Big Chill?

Imagine your favorite ice cream on a super hot day. It melts fast because it's warm! Cold is the opposite.

It's when the air or anything else is not very warm. When something is cold, the tiny, tiny pieces that make it up, called particles, don't wiggle and jiggle as much. They get sleepy and slow down.

The coldest anything can possibly get is called absolute zero, which is like the ultimate sleepy time for particles!

Feeling the Freeze!

Sometimes, cold is just how we feel. If you're outside on a windy day without a jacket, you might feel cold even if the air isn't freezing. That's because the wind is taking away your body's warmth. Our bodies have a special temperature, and when the air is much cooler than that, we feel cold. It's like when you step out of a warm swimming pool into the cool air – whoosh!

Super Slow-Motion Particles!

Everything is made of tiny parts that are always moving, like a busy playground! When things are hot, these parts zoom around super fast. But when it's cold, they slow down a lot, like they're taking a nap. At the coldest temperature ever, absolute zero, these parts would almost stop moving completely! It's like hitting the pause button on the universe's tiniest dancers.

Cold Around Us!

We experience cold in lots of ways. Think about ice cubes in your drink, or the frosty air on a winter morning. Even the inside of your refrigerator is kept cold to keep food fresh. Scientists have special ways to measure how cold things are, using thermometers. The coldest place in the universe is way, way colder than any winter day on Earth!
