Lastarria
Key Facts
Meet the Giant Mountain!
Lastarria is a super-duper tall volcano, almost as tall as 10 Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other! It's so high, it reaches 5,697 meters (that's 18,691 feet) into the sky. It sits right on the border between two countries, Chile and Argentina, like a giant guardian.
Even though it's so big, nobody lives nearby because it's a bit wild and remote. It's part of a huge family of volcanoes called the Andes Mountains, which are like a long, bumpy spine running down South America.
What's Happening Inside?
This giant mountain is a stratovolcano, which means it's built up from many layers of lava and ash, like a giant layer cake. It has two main peaks that look like a bumpy ridge, and a smaller lava flow field nearby. Even though Lastarria hasn't erupted with lava in a long time, it's still very active!
It lets out lots of steamy gas from holes on its northern side and inside its craters. This gas is so hot and steamy, it can even melt sulfur into gooey, yellow rivers!
A Mountain That Moved!
Once upon a time, a huge chunk of Lastarria's side decided to take a tumble! A giant landslide happened, and a piece of the mountain, about 1 kilometer wide, slid down for 8 kilometers. That's like sliding down a super long playground slide for the length of 8 football fields!
This massive rockslide left a big scar on the mountain's side. The hot gases coming out of Lastarria are so powerful, they make it the biggest source of volcanic gas in the whole area.
Why This Volcano is Cool!
Lastarria is super interesting because it shows us how our planet is always changing. The hot gases it releases are a big clue that there's still hot, melted rock (magma) deep underground. Scientists can see that the ground around Lastarria is slowly being pushed up, like a balloon being inflated from below.
This tells them that something big is happening beneath the surface, and it helps them understand how volcanoes work and how mountains are formed over millions of years.
