Landfill
Key Facts
Meet the Trash Mountain!
A landfill is like a super-duper big hole or a special place where we put all the trash that we don't want anymore. Think of all the wrappers, old toys, and food scraps! They all go to the landfill.
It's like a giant storage unit for our garbage. Sometimes, landfills can get really, really big, like a mountain made of trash! They are usually built far away from our homes so they don't smell too bad.
Where Did Landfills Come From?
Long, long ago, people didn't have as much stuff, so they didn't make as much trash. They might have just thrown things away in a pile. But as people started buying more things, we made more trash!
So, we needed a better way to store it. That's when people started digging big holes and covering the trash to keep it tidy. The first real landfills were made many, many years ago, and they have gotten bigger and more organized over time.
Why Landfills Matter to Us
Landfills are important because they help keep our neighborhoods clean. Imagine if all our trash just piled up on the streets! It would be messy and smelly.
Landfills take all that trash and put it in one place. They are also designed to be safe, so the yucky stuff from the trash doesn't leak into the ground or water. It's a way to manage all the things we throw away so we can live in a cleaner world.
How the Trash Gets Buried!
When trash arrives at a landfill, it's usually dumped out of big trucks. Then, special machines, like giant bulldozers, push the trash around. After a big pile of trash is made, it gets covered with a layer of dirt. This is done every day! Covering the trash helps stop it from blowing away, keeps animals away, and helps control any smells. It's like tucking the trash into bed with a dirt blanket!
