Lac-Mégantic Rail Disaster

One night, a long train with 73 cars was parked. But oops! It started rolling all by itself down a hill! It was carrying a special kind of oil called crude oil. The train couldn't stop and zoomed into a town called Lac-Mégantic. This happened very early in the morning, when most people were fast asleep.

When the train crashed in the middle of the town, some of the oil cars exploded! It was like a giant firework, but much, much bigger and scarier. The fire was so hot and so big that it destroyed almost half of the town's buildings. It was a very sad and dangerous night for everyone living there.

After the big accident, smart people looked into why it happened. They found out that the train wasn't parked safely. The brakes weren't put on tight enough, and there wasn't a backup plan to stop it if something went wrong. It's like forgetting to put the parking brake on your bike and it rolls away!

This train crash was one of the saddest train accidents ever in Canada. Sadly, 47 people lost their lives. It also meant that many homes and buildings in the town were too damaged or dirty from the oil to be used anymore. It reminds us how important it is to be super careful with trains and what they carry.
