Kunturiri (Los Andes)
Key Facts
Meet the Giant Condor Mountain!
Kunturiri is a super tall mountain in a place called the Andes Mountains. It's so big, it looks like a giant condor, a special bird, with its wings stretched out! The highest part, called the 'head,' is 5,648 meters (that's like 18,530 feet!) high. That's taller than many, many houses stacked up! It's part of a whole group of mountains that together look like a condor. How cool is that?
Wings and Peaks!
This mountain group has three main parts that make it look like a condor. There's the 'head' which is the tallest peak. Then there are two 'wings' โ one called 'left wing' and the other 'right wing.' These wings are also very tall mountains, but a little shorter than the head. They are all connected and form this amazing shape that reminds people of a condor bird soaring in the sky.
Tiny Lakes and Big Peaks!
Around Kunturiri, there are some small, beautiful lakes named Ch'iyar Quta and Juri Quta. They are like sparkly jewels near the giant mountain. Even though Kunturiri is the most famous part, there are many other smaller peaks around it, like Pico Reya and Titicaca. Each one has its own special name, some in a language called Aymara and others in Spanish.
A Mountain's Name Story
The name Kunturiri comes from a language called Aymara. 'Kunturi' means condor, and 'iri' is a little ending. So, Kunturiri basically means 'place of the condor' or 'like a condor'! This makes sense because the mountain group looks so much like a condor with its wings spread. It's a special name for a special mountain!
