Key Facts
Your New Fuzzy Friend!
Koalas are super special animals that live in Australia. They look a bit like teddy bears with their fluffy ears and big noses! These amazing creatures spend most of their lives snoozing in trees. They are marsupials, which means the mommies carry their babies in a pouch, just like kangaroos! Koalas are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants, and their favorite food is eucalyptus leaves.
A Treehouse Dweller
Koalas make their homes in eucalyptus trees, mostly in the eastern and southeastern parts of Australia. Imagine living in a giant tree all day! They have sharp claws that help them climb and hold onto branches tightly. When they sleep, they can curl up on a branch or even hug the trunk to stay comfy. Their fur is thick and helps keep them warm and dry when it rains.
Super Sleepy Superstars!
Did you know koalas sleep for up to 20 hours a day? That's almost the whole day! They need so much sleep because eucalyptus leaves don't give them a lot of energy. Their bodies are amazing at digesting these tough leaves. A baby koala, called a joey, is tiny when it's born and crawls straight into its mom's pouch to grow big and strong.
Koalas Need Our Help!
Sadly, koalas are in danger. Their homes are disappearing because of forests being cut down, and they can get sick. Scientists are working hard to protect them and their eucalyptus forests. It's important for us to learn about koalas and help keep them safe so they can keep snoozing and munching in the trees for a long, long time!
