This dispute led to a protracted argument, ultimately resulting in George Forster publishing 'A Voyage Round the World' six weeks before Cook's own account. Johann Reinhold Forster also published his independent scientific findings in 'Observations Made During a Voyage Round the World.' Despite his scientific achievements, Forster's pride and perceived obstinacy led to friction with influential figures in England. After securing financial support from German patrons to clear his debts, he returned to Germany in 1780.

There, he accepted a professorship at the University of Halle, where he also managed the university's botanical garden and continued to publish across a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines until his death in 1798.
