Key Facts
When the Sky Turned Orange!
In January 2025, a bunch of big fires, called wildfires, started in Southern California. They were like angry dragons breathing fire! These fires happened in places like Los Angeles and San Diego. It was a very busy and scary time for lots of people and animals living there. The fires were so big, they changed the color of the sky to a spooky orange!
What Made the Fires So Fierce?
These fires got super strong because of a few things. It was very dry, like a crunchy leaf. There wasn't much rain, and the air was super dry too. Plus, lots of plants had grown from the winter before, like a big pile of dry twigs just waiting for a spark. And then, BAM! Super strong winds, like a giant blowing really hard, pushed the flames everywhere!
Homes Lost and Brave Rescuers!
Sadly, these fires were very destructive. They burned down over 18,000 homes, which is more homes than in many small towns! Many people had to leave their houses very quickly to stay safe. But there were also amazing heroes! Firefighters from different teams worked together, using planes and trucks to fight the fires and help people. They were super brave!
The Biggest Fires Ever?
Two fires, called the Eaton Fire and the Palisades Fire, were the biggest and caused the most trouble. They were so big, they might be the second and third most destructive fires California has ever seen! That's like comparing them to the biggest rollercoasters in the world โ they were that huge and impactful. It took until the very end of January for firefighters to finally put them out.
