Iroquois

Imagine a group of people who lived long, long ago in what is now New York State and Canada. These were the Iroquois! They were known for living in special houses called longhouses.

These houses were super long, sometimes as long as a school bus! Many families lived together in one longhouse, sharing meals and stories. They were also known as the Haudenosaunee, which means 'people of the longhouse'.

The Iroquois were made up of different nations, like the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. Later, the Tuscarora joined too. They all worked together and had a special agreement called the Great Law of Peace.

This law helped them solve problems without fighting. It was like having a super-important rulebook to keep everyone safe and happy. They believed in living in harmony with each other and with nature.

The Iroquois were amazing farmers! They grew corn, beans, and squash, which they called the 'Three Sisters'. These plants grew well together and gave them lots of healthy food.

They also hunted for deer and fished in the rivers. Besides farming and hunting, they were skilled craftspeople, making beautiful pottery and beadwork. They also had important ceremonies and celebrations throughout the year.

The Iroquois people have a rich history and culture that is still important today. Their ideas about working together and making peace have inspired people for a very long time.
