Idomeneo

Imagine a king named Idomeneo who ruled the island of Crete. One day, he was sailing home and got caught in a HUGE storm! He made a promise to a god: if he survived, he would sacrifice the first person he saw when he got back.

Uh oh! The first person was his own son, Idamante. This is the start of a famous opera called Idomeneo, which means 'Idomeneus, King of Crete'.

It's a story full of drama and tough choices!

This exciting story was turned into an opera by a super-talented composer named Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was like a music wizard! He wrote this opera a long, long time ago, in 1781.

The words, or 'libretto', were written by Giambattista Varesco. They took an older French story and made it even more amazing for a special party called a carnival. It was first performed in a beautiful theater in Munich, Germany.

Idomeneo is special because it's an opera seria, which means it's a very serious and dramatic kind of opera. It's filled with big emotions, powerful singing, and a story that makes you think. Mozart was still quite young when he wrote it, but it shows how brilliant he was even then!
