Ice age
Key Facts
Brrr! What is an Ice Age?
An ice age is like Earth taking a really, really long, cold nap! During these times, the planet gets so chilly that huge sheets of ice, like giant frozen blankets, spread across the land. These ice sheets can be as thick as a tall building! They also make the ice at the North and South Poles grow much bigger. It's a time when the Earth's temperature drops a lot, making everything frosty and icy.
When Did the Big Chill Happen?
Earth has had many ice ages over its super long life! Scientists call the really cold times 'glacials' and the warmer times in between 'interglacials'. Right now, we are in a warmer time, but Earth is still in a big, long ice age that started millions of years ago.
The last super cold part of this ice age was a long, long time ago, and it ended about 11,700 years ago. Imagine snow and ice everywhere for thousands of years!
Why Do Ice Ages Matter?
Ice ages are super important because they change the whole planet! When ice sheets grow, they push and scrape the land, carving out valleys and lakes that we see today. They also lower the sea level, making more land appear between continents.
When the ice melts, it raises the sea level again. These changes have shaped the world and helped create the places where plants, animals, and even people live.
How Does Earth Get So Cold?
Scientists are still figuring out all the reasons, but it's like a puzzle! Changes in Earth's orbit, which is its path around the sun, can make our planet get a little less sunlight. Also, the way Earth is tilted can change. Sometimes, big volcanic eruptions can put dust into the air that blocks the sun. It's a mix of things that can make Earth's temperature drop enough to start an ice age.
