Ian Smith

Ian Smith was a pilot who flew planes during a big war called World War II. After the war, he became a farmer and then a leader in his country, Rhodesia. He was born there, which was special because most leaders were from far away. He was the Prime Minister for a long time, about 15 years! Imagine being in charge of a whole country for that long!

Rhodesia was a country that was part of the United Kingdom. Ian Smith and his friends decided they wanted Rhodesia to be its own country. They declared independence in 1965. This was a big deal and caused a lot of arguments and even a war. It was like deciding to leave a big club without asking the club leaders first.

Before becoming a leader, Ian Smith was a brave fighter pilot in World War II. He flew planes and fought in battles. Once, his plane crashed, and he got hurt, especially his face. But he got better and kept flying! He even fought alongside people called partisans in Europe. It shows he was a determined person.

As Prime Minister, Ian Smith led a government made up of mostly white people. They made rules that didn't give the black majority a say in how the country was run. This led to a long conflict called the Rhodesian Bush War. Even though he was in charge for many years, his decisions were very controversial and are still talked about today.
