Key Facts
Who Were the Hyksos?
The Hyksos were a group of people who became kings in ancient Egypt a super long time ago, around 1650 BC. They weren't originally from Egypt but came from lands to the east. Their main city was called Avaris, right in the part of Egypt called the Nile Delta. From there, they ruled over a big part of Egypt for about 100 years. It was the first time Egypt was ruled by people from another land!
Where Did They Come From?
Nobody is exactly sure where the Hyksos came from, but most people think they were from a place called the Levant, which is like the area of countries like Israel and Syria today. They might have slowly moved into Egypt over many years, settling down. Then, when Egypt's own rulers were having trouble, the Hyksos took charge!
It wasn't like a sudden invasion, but more like they grew stronger and stronger until they were in charge.
Cool New Inventions!
The Hyksos brought some awesome new things to Egypt! They are famous for introducing the horse and chariot, which were like super-fast battle wagons. Imagine a horse pulling a small cart with warriors inside โ super speedy! They might have also brought new kinds of swords, like the khopesh, which looked like a sickle, and a special bow called a composite bow. These made their armies very strong.
Leaving Egypt Behind
Even though the Hyksos ruled a big part of Egypt, they didn't rule the whole country. There were other Egyptian rulers in the south, in a city called Thebes. Eventually, the Egyptian rulers in Thebes got strong enough to fight back.
They defeated the Hyksos and kicked them out of Egypt. After they left, Egyptians sometimes wrote stories about them being mean rulers, but we know they also brought cool new ideas!
