Getting Ready for the Big Game!

Before the war, the UK was like a busy playground with lots of different games happening, like arguments between workers and people wanting the right to vote. There was also a big disagreement in Ireland! But when the war started in 1914, everyone stopped their old games and got ready for a new, much bigger one.

It was a time when people felt excited to help their country, like cheering for their favorite team.

Soldiers, Planes, and a Giant Army!

The UK had to find lots and lots of people to fight. They even started asking everyone to join, which was a first! This created a huge army called Kitchener's Army, with over 2 million soldiers – that's more than the number of kids in many big cities!

For the first time, they also created the Royal Air Force, with planes that could fly and fight. Imagine planes being used in a war for the very first time!

Life Changed Super Fast!

The war meant that things couldn't just be 'business as usual.' The government started making lots of new rules to help with the war effort. People had to be careful about food, and sometimes there weren't enough workers because so many men were fighting. Women started doing jobs that men used to do, helping in factories and other places. It was a big change for everyone!

Saying Goodbye and Remembering

Sadly, many brave soldiers lost their lives fighting in the war. Lots of people at home also got sick, and some even died because there wasn't enough food. After the war ended in 1918, the UK was different. People remembered the sacrifices made and how much life had changed. It was a time of great sadness but also of remembering the bravery of everyone involved.
