Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Helmand!
Imagine a super-long ribbon of water! That's the Helmand River, the longest river in Afghanistan. It starts way up high in the snowy Hindu Kush mountains, like a tiny trickle that grows bigger and bigger. It zigs and zags across the land, carrying water to places that need it. It's like a giant water slide for the land, making sure everything gets a drink!
A River's Big Journey
The Helmand River travels a very, very long way. It begins in the Sanglakh Range, which is part of the huge Hindu Kush mountains. Think of it as starting at the tippy-top of a giant playground slide! It flows through dry lands, helping plants grow and giving water to people. It’s so important that it’s the main way water gets to a special dry area called the Sistan Basin.
Water for a Thirsty Land
This amazing river doesn't just flow into the sea like many rivers you know. Instead, it flows into a big lake called Hamun Lake. This lake is like a giant bathtub for water in a dry place, right on the border between Afghanistan and another country, Iran. The Helmand River is a lifesaver, bringing precious water to this often dry region.
Ancient Names for a Special River
People have known about the Helmand River for a super long time! Even ancient Greeks had a name for it: Etymandros. And the Romans called it Erymandrus. That shows how important this river has been for thousands of years. It’s like a famous landmark that people have always talked about and relied on.
