What's Hanukkah All About?

Hanukkah is a super happy holiday that lasts for eight whole nights and days! It's like a special birthday party for a very important place called the Second Temple in Jerusalem. A long, long time ago, brave people called the Maccabees won a big fight and got to make the temple shiny and new again.

To celebrate, they lit a special lamp that stayed lit for eight days, even though they only had a tiny bit of oil! That's why we call it the Festival of Lights.

Lighting Up the Nights!

The most exciting part of Hanukkah is lighting a special candle holder called a menorah. It has nine spots for candles. One candle, called the 'shammash' or helper candle, is used to light the other eight.

Each night, you light one more candle. So, on the first night, you light one extra candle. On the second night, you light two, and so on, until all eight candles are glowing brightly on the last night!

It’s like a magical light show that gets brighter every evening.

Yummy Hanukkah Treats!

Guess what else happens during Hanukkah? Lots of delicious food! Because the special lamp stayed lit with oil a long time ago, people love to eat foods cooked in oil.

This means yummy potato pancakes called 'latkes' and sweet, fluffy donuts filled with jelly called 'sufganiyot'. They are so tasty! Sometimes people also eat yummy dairy foods.

It’s a time for feasting and enjoying sweet and savory treats with family and friends.

Games and Songs!

Besides eating and lighting candles, there are other fun things to do during Hanukkah. People love to sing special Hanukkah songs that tell the story of the holiday. They also play a fun game with a spinning top called a 'dreidel'.

The dreidel has letters on it that tell a story about the holiday too. It’s a time for laughter, music, and playing together, making the eight nights extra special and memorable for everyone.
