Meet the Giant Room!

A great hall was like the super-sized main room in old castles and big houses. Think of it as the ultimate hangout spot for lords and ladies way back when! It was usually long and tall, much bigger than your classroom. This was where important people lived and worked, and it was the busiest place in the whole building. It was the center of everything that happened!

Where Did They Come From?

These amazing halls were super popular in places like England and Scotland hundreds of years ago, during medieval times. They were built in royal palaces and castles. The word 'great' back then just meant 'big', not necessarily 'awesome'. So, a great hall was simply a really, really big hall. People used them for a long time, even into the 1600s!

What Happened Inside?

So much happened in the great hall! It was like a busy town square inside a building. People ate meals together, from the lord to some of the servants. Guests were welcomed here, and sometimes, people even slept on the floor at night! It was also where musicians might play from a special balcony called a minstrels' gallery.

A Room for Everything!

The great hall was a room that did it all! It wasn't just for eating. It was for welcoming visitors, holding feasts, and being the main gathering place for everyone living in the castle. Imagine a room that's also a dining room, a reception hall, and even a bedroom sometimes. That's how important and busy the great hall was!
