A Super-Sized Splash!

Gatun Lake is like a giant, watery playground in Panama, a country that connects North and South America. It's not a natural lake; people built it! It's so big that it helps ships sail across the land. Think of it as a giant shortcut for boats, making their journey much shorter. The water is mostly fresh, like in a river, but a little bit salty near where the big locks are.

When the Water Came to Play!

This amazing lake wasn't always here. It was created a long, long time ago, in 1913, when workers closed the gates of a giant dam called Gatun Dam. At first, the water level was about as high as a two-story building. It took about six months for the lake to fill up to its full, working level, ready for ships to start their adventure!

Boats on a Big Adventure!

Gatun Lake is super important because it's a huge part of the Panama Canal. Ships use this lake to travel 33 kilometers (that's about 21 miles!) across the land. It lifts them up 26 meters (85 feet) above sea level, which is taller than a three-story building! This makes it possible for giant ships to cross the land between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Home to Many Creatures!

Even though it's a man-made lake, Gatun Lake is a home for lots of amazing animals. You can find fish swimming in its waters, and many birds love to visit. Sometimes, you might even see monkeys swinging in the trees along the shore! It's a busy place, full of life, all thanks to the water that fills this incredible lake.
