Key Facts
Meet the Five Bosses!
Once upon a time in France, after a huge change called the French Revolution, a new way of ruling was created. It was called the Directory! Instead of one king or queen, five important men were in charge of the country.
They were like a team of super-rulers, making big decisions together. This team governed France for about four years, from 1795 to 1799. They had to figure out how to make the country run smoothly after all the chaos.
A Country at War!
While the five leaders were busy in France, the country was also fighting with many other countries around the world! Think of it like a big playground argument that spread everywhere. France was at war with places like Britain, Austria, and even the Ottoman Empire.
To help pay for the wars, France took lots of money and amazing art from the places it conquered. This art even ended up in a famous museum in Paris called the Louvre!
Money Troubles and Big Changes
Running a country is hard, and France had lots of money problems. They had printed too much paper money, and it wasn't worth much anymore, like a toy coin that can't buy real candy. Prices for everything went super high!
The Directory tried to fix it, but it caused new problems. They also tried to stop the scary punishments from the past and let some people go free, but then other groups got angry and caused more trouble.
A New Leader Takes Over!
After a few years, the five leaders of the Directory weren't very popular anymore. People were tired of the problems. Then, a very famous soldier named Napoleon Bonaparte came back from fighting in faraway places like Egypt.
Some people asked him to help change the government. So, he did! He took over the Directory and started a new government called the Consulate, with himself as the main leader.
This was the end of the Directory's rule.
