Knights on a Big Trip!

Imagine a huge group of brave knights wanting to go on a very important journey to a special city called Jerusalem. They were called Crusaders! They planned to sail on big ships, like a giant floating army.

But things didn't go as planned. Instead of sailing straight to Jerusalem, they got sidetracked by a tricky deal with some boat builders. It was like planning a trip to the zoo but ending up at a water park instead!

Oops! Wrong City!

The knights needed lots of ships, and they made a deal with people from a city called Venice to build them. But not as many knights showed up as they thought! They couldn't pay for all the ships.

So, the boat builders said, 'Hey, why don't you help us attack a city called Zara first?' The knights agreed, and they attacked Zara, even though it was a Christian city too! It was like a school bully making you do something you didn't want to.

A City of Gold and Trouble!

Then, the knights heard about a super rich and famous city called Constantinople. A prince there promised them lots of gold if they helped him become emperor. So, the knights sailed to Constantinople.

They helped the prince, but then things got messy. People in the city got angry, and the knights ended up attacking and taking over Constantinople! They found so much treasure, it was like finding a pirate's chest full of jewels!

What Happened Next?

Instead of going to Jerusalem, the knights spent their time fighting and taking over Constantinople. They broke up the big Byzantine Empire into smaller pieces. Some knights were very unhappy about this and went home. The Fourth Crusade didn't achieve its original goal of reaching Jerusalem, but it changed history in a big way, making some cities very rich and others very sad.
