Meet the Federation of Malaya!

Once upon a time, there was a place called the Federation of Malaya. It was like a special club made up of eleven different parts. Think of it like a big puzzle with eleven pieces that fit together!

These pieces were nine Malay states and two special places called Penang and Malacca. This country was around from 1948 to 1963, a time before many of your parents were even born! It was a self-governing colony, which meant it had its own rules but was still connected to the United Kingdom.

How Did It All Start?

Before it was the Federation of Malaya, there was something called the Malayan Union. And even before that, it was known as British Malaya. So, it was like a country that changed its name and its team members over time!

The Federation of Malaya officially started on February 1, 1948. It was a big step because it was the first time these eleven places officially joined together as one country, ready to make their own way in the world.

A Big Change to Become Malaysia!

The Federation of Malaya was super important because it was a stepping stone to becoming the country we know today as Malaysia! In 1957, it became fully independent, like a grown-up ready to make all its own decisions. Then, in 1963, it joined up with other places like Singapore, North Borneo (which we now call Sabah), and Sarawak.

This big team-up created Malaysia! It’s like when you and your friends decide to form a super team to play a game.

What Happened Next?

After becoming Malaysia, things changed again. Singapore eventually left the team in 1965. But the original parts of the Federation of Malaya, along with Sabah and Sarawak, stayed together.

Today, those original eleven states are called Peninsular Malaysia or West Malaysia. So, the Federation of Malaya was a really important part of how Malaysia was formed, like a key ingredient in a delicious recipe!
