Meet the Shadow Detective!

Eratosthenes was like a detective for the whole world! He lived a super long time ago, even before dinosaurs were gone! He was a brilliant thinker who loved learning about everything. He was so smart that people called him 'Pentathlos,' which means he was good at many different things, like a super-athlete of the mind! He even worked at a giant library filled with scrolls of knowledge.

How He Measured the Earth

Eratosthenes had a super clever idea. He knew that on a sunny day, a stick in the ground would make a shadow. But he also knew that at the same time in a different city, the shadow would be different!

He noticed that in one city, the sun was straight overhead, making no shadow at all. But in another city, further north, the sun made a shadow. By measuring the angle of that shadow and knowing the distance between the cities, he figured out how big the Earth is!

It was like solving a giant puzzle!

Earth's Amazing Size!

Eratosthenes' math was so good that his guess for the Earth's size was almost perfect! He figured out that the Earth was about 25,000 miles around. That's like driving around the Earth in a car more than 100 times! His calculation was so close to what we know today, it's mind-blowing. He was the first person ever to measure the whole planet like that, using just his brain and some simple tools.

More Than Just Earth's Size

Eratosthenes didn't stop there! He also figured out how much the Earth is tilted on its side, which is why we have seasons like summer and winter. He even invented a cool way to find special numbers called prime numbers, which are only divisible by 1 and themselves. He was a true genius who helped us understand our world and numbers better.
