Key Facts
Where the Nile Meets the Sea!
Alexandria is a super cool city in Egypt, right where the big Nile River flows into the sparkly Mediterranean Sea! It's like a long, wavy ribbon along the coast, stretching for about 40 kilometers. That's like running back and forth to school almost 10 times!
It's Egypt's main port, where ships bring and take all sorts of treasures. It's also the second biggest city in Egypt, after Cairo, and the biggest one you'll find along the whole Mediterranean coast!
A City Fit for a King!
A very long time ago, in 331 BC, a famous leader named Alexander the Great decided to build this city. He wanted it to be a special place for learning and fun. It was built near an even older Egyptian town.
For a long time, Alexandria was one of the most important and biggest cities in the whole ancient world. People came from everywhere to trade, learn, and share ideas. It was like the busiest playground for grown-ups!
Wonders of the Ancient World!
Alexandria was famous for some truly amazing things! It had the Lighthouse of Alexandria, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Imagine a lighthouse taller than a skyscraper, guiding ships safely!
It also had the Great Library, which was the biggest library ever in ancient times. It held so many scrolls and books! Plus, there were the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, like an underground city of tombs, which was also considered a wonder.
Still a Busy Bee!
Even though it's super old, Alexandria is still a very important city today. It's known as the 'Bride of the Mediterranean' because it's so beautiful and important to the sea. It's a popular place for people to visit and see all the history.
It's also a big center for making things and trading. It's one of the biggest cities in the whole Arab world and the Middle East, and a really big city in Africa too!
