Elver Eating World Championships

In a small village in England called Frampton on Severn, there's a super fun competition! It's called the Elver Eating World Championships. People gather on the village green to watch brave eaters try to finish their food the fastest. It's like a race, but with food! The winners are the ones who can eat their special food the quickest, and everyone cheers them on.

A long, long time ago, baby eels called elvers were a very important food for people living near the Severn River. When the elvers arrived each year, it was a big celebration! Over time, this celebration turned into a contest. By the 1970s, it was called the National Elver Eating Competition. It was so popular that people called it a 'World Championship'!

Elvers are actually baby European eels. They are very small and wiggly when they first arrive in the rivers. For many years, people in the Severn Valley thought they were a tasty and special food. The arrival of these little eels was a sign of the changing seasons and something to celebrate with a big meal. That's why the elver eating contest started!

Today, the contest is a little different. Instead of real elvers, people eat special elver-shaped snacks made of something called surimi. Men have to eat about as much as a small bag of sugar, and women eat half that much. Kids get to eat yummy spaghetti! The person who finishes their food first, without making a mess, is the champion. It's all about speed!
