Edward Canby

Edward Canby was born a long, long time ago, way back in 1817. He grew up to be a soldier in the United States Army. Imagine him as a grown-up who loved following rules and leading people. He became a general, which is like being a captain of a whole team of soldiers. He was a very important person who helped lead the country during tough times.

General Canby was a hero in a big fight called the Civil War. He was in charge of a place called New Mexico. There, he bravely stopped another army from coming further. He was also there when the war ended, and he helped accept the surrender of enemy generals. It was like winning a very important game and shaking hands with the other team when it was over.

After the big war, General Canby tried to help different groups of people get along. He went to a place called the Northwest to talk to a Native American tribe called the Modoc. They were upset because they didn't want to leave their homes. General Canby wanted to find a way for everyone to be safe and happy, but sadly, his peace talks didn't end well.

During those peace talks with the Modoc tribe, something very sad happened. Their leader, named Chief Kintpuash, was very angry. He did not want to move his people. Sadly, Chief Kintpuash attacked General Canby and he was killed. It was a very tragic end for a man who had spent his life serving his country and trying to make peace.
