Leaping to Survival

Key Facts
Why Were They Fighting in the Mountains?
Long ago, during the American Civil War, two big teams, the Union (blue) and the Confederacy (gray), were trying to control a huge part of America. The Confederacy wanted to take over the West, all the way to the ocean! They thought if they could win battles in New Mexico, they could get to important places with gold and silver mines.
This battle happened in a special mountain path called Glorieta Pass, high up in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It was like a secret doorway through the mountains that both sides wanted to control. The Union wanted to keep it, and the Confederacy wanted to sneak through!
The Big Mountain Showdown!
The fighting happened over a few days in March 1862. First, some soldiers from each side bumped into each other on March 26th. Then, on March 28th, the main fight began!
The Confederates were really strong and pushed the Union soldiers back. It seemed like they might win! But then, something surprising happened.
The Union soldiers found the Confederacy's food and supplies, and their horses and mules, and made sure they couldn't be used anymore. Imagine all your toys being taken away – that's how the Confederates felt!
Who Was in Charge?
There wasn't one single super-famous leader for this battle, but there were important commanders. On the Union side, Colonel John P. Slough was a key leader.
He was a lawyer before the war! On the Confederate side, General Henry H. Sibley was in charge of the whole invasion.
He was hoping to lead his soldiers to victory and claim the West for the South. Even though we don't hear their names as much as some other generals, their decisions were super important for what happened at Glorieta Pass.
Why This Battle Was a HUGE Deal!
Even though it wasn't the biggest battle, Glorieta Pass was super important! The Confederacy really wanted to win and take over the West. But after this battle, they had to go home and never tried to conquer that part of the country again.
It was like they lost their chance to grab the whole cookie jar! The Union kept control of the West, and this battle helped decide what the United States would look like for a long, long time. It was the biggest and last big try by the South to win the West.
