Durham, England

Durham is a super cool city in England that's built on a bend in a river called the River Wear. The river wraps around the city center like a big hug on three sides! This makes it tricky for people to get in and out, but it was great for keeping safe a long, long time ago. The land around Durham is also quite hilly, like rolling green waves, except for a flat area near the river.

A very long time ago, around the year 995, monks came to Durham looking for a safe place to keep special treasures. They were hiding from Viking raiders! They built a church, but later, after some big changes in England, an even bigger and more amazing cathedral was built. It still stands today, right next to a huge castle. These two buildings are so special they are famous all over the world!

People in Durham have always been busy! A long time ago, they made warm socks and blankets (called hosiery), beautiful carpets, and even spicy mustard! Later, they dug deep into the ground to find coal, which powered lots of machines.

Even though the coal mines are closed now, people still have big parties and parades to remember that time. The city is also home to a famous university where students learn lots of new things.

Durham is the main city for a bigger area called County Durham. The people who run things for the whole county have their main office right here in Durham city. They make important decisions about schools, roads, and parks for everyone living in the area. It's like the principal's office for the whole region, making sure everything runs smoothly.
