Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Castle!
Castles were like super-strong homes built a long, long time ago. They weren't just houses; they were fortresses! Think of them as giant stone boxes with tall towers, thick walls, and sometimes even a moat filled with water.
People built them to stay safe from enemies. Inside, there were rooms for families, kitchens, and even places for soldiers to sleep. They were built to last and look very impressive, like a king's or queen's special headquarters.
When Knights Ruled the Land!
Castles started appearing a very long time ago, around 900 AD. Knights and lords needed safe places to live and protect their land. At first, they were made of wood, but soon builders realized stone was much stronger and harder to break.
Over hundreds of years, castles got bigger and more complicated. They added more walls, more towers, and clever ways to defend them, like narrow windows for archers to shoot arrows from. They were the ultimate safe houses of their day!
Why Castles Were So Cool!
Castles were super important because they kept people safe. If enemies came to attack, people could run inside the strong walls. The tall towers let guards see far away to spot danger coming.
Sometimes, castles were so big they were like small towns inside! They showed how powerful the person who owned them was. Many castles still stand today, and visiting them is like stepping back in time to see where knights and royalty once lived and worked.
Castle Defenses: Superpowers!
Castles had amazing ways to keep invaders out. The walls were super thick, sometimes as wide as a school bus! Many had a moat, a ditch filled with water, that enemies had to cross.
There were also drawbridges that could be pulled up at night. Inside the walls, there were battlements, which are like little walls with gaps so archers could shoot arrows safely. Some castles even had a 'murder hole' where defenders could drop things on attackers below!
