Imagine a super sneaky disease called smallpox that made people very sick. It was like a monster hiding in plain sight! Dr.

Donald Henderson was a brave doctor who decided to fight this monster. He led a team of helpers all around the world for 10 whole years. They worked super hard to make sure everyone got a special shot, called a vaccine, to protect them.

It was a giant mission, like trying to clean up every playground on Earth at the same time!

Dr. Henderson and his friends had a super important job: to get rid of smallpox everywhere. They traveled to faraway places and worked with doctors and nurses there.

They taught people how to stay safe and gave them the vaccine. It took a long, long time, from 1967 to 1977, which is longer than you've been alive! But guess what?

They did it! Smallpox is now gone from the world, and that's thanks to their amazing work.

Why is Dr. Henderson so special? Because he helped save millions of lives! Before him, smallpox was a big problem. It could leave scars on people's faces and even make them lose their eyesight. By getting rid of it, Dr. Henderson made the world a much safer and healthier place for everyone, especially for kids. He showed us that even one person can make a HUGE difference.

After Dr. Henderson finished his big smallpox mission, he didn't stop helping people. He became a teacher at a famous school called Johns Hopkins.

He taught other doctors how to keep people healthy and how to get ready for new health problems. He also helped make sure we were prepared for emergencies, like when there are natural disasters or if someone tried to use germs to hurt people. He was always thinking about how to protect us all.
