The Dodo: A Bird That Couldn't Fly!

The dodo was a bird that lived a long, long time ago on a beautiful island called Mauritius. It was a very unusual bird! It was plump and round, with a big head, a funny hooked beak, and tiny wings that were too small to help it fly. It waddled around on the ground, looking for yummy food. It was about as tall as a young child and weighed as much as a big bag of potatoes!

Dodos lived only on the island of Mauritius, which is in the Indian Ocean. This island was like a safe paradise for them! There were no big animals that wanted to eat them, so they didn't need to fly away. They spent their days walking on the ground, looking for fruits and seeds to eat. They built their nests on the ground too, making them easy for anyone to find.

When ships full of people arrived at Mauritius, things changed for the dodo. The people brought new animals with them, like dogs and cats, that loved to eat dodo eggs and the dodos themselves. Because dodos couldn't fly and weren't used to danger, they couldn't escape.

Sadly, this meant that very soon, there were no more dodos left in the world. It's a sad story, but it teaches us to protect animals.

Even though dodos are gone, we still talk about them! They are famous because they are an example of an animal that disappeared forever. Scientists study old dodo bones to learn about them. The word 'dodo' has even become a word we use for someone who is a bit slow or old-fashioned. It's a reminder to be careful and kind to all the animals we share our planet with.
