Democritus

Long, long ago, in ancient Greece, lived a very clever man named Democritus. He was known as the 'laughing philosopher' because he loved to be cheerful and find the funny side of things! He thought that being happy was super important. He also thought about the world in a way nobody had before, wondering what everything was made of.

Democritus had a BIG idea! He thought that if you broke something into smaller and smaller pieces, you would eventually get to tiny, tiny bits that you couldn't break anymore. He called these bits 'atoms'. He imagined them like tiny LEGO bricks that build up everything around us – your toys, your food, even you! These atoms were so small, you couldn't see them, even with a magnifying glass.

Democritus believed that these tiny atoms were always moving around. They could bump into each other and stick together to make different things. He thought there were different kinds of atoms, and how they joined up made things look and feel different. It's like having red LEGOs and blue LEGOs – you can build different things with them!

Even though Democritus lived thousands of years ago, his idea about atoms was super smart! Scientists today know that he was right. Everything IS made of atoms! His thinking helped people understand the world better, just like learning your ABCs helps you read. He showed that asking 'why' and 'how' can lead to amazing discoveries.
