Key Facts
Meet the Atom Detective!
Imagine a super detective who loved puzzles! That was John Dalton. He lived a long, long time ago in England, from 1766 to 1844.
John wasn't just any detective; he was a scientist who looked at the world and wondered what it was made of. He loved to measure things and write down his observations, like a super-organized note-taker. He was curious about everything, from the weather to the tiniest bits of stuff around us.
Tiny Building Blocks for Everything!
John Dalton had a brilliant idea: everything, from your toys to the air you breathe, is made of tiny, invisible pieces called atoms. He thought that each kind of stuff, like gold or oxygen, had its own special kind of atom. And when different kinds of atoms joined together, they made new things, like water!
It was like LEGO bricks, but way, way smaller and invisible. This idea helped us understand how the world works.
Seeing the World in a Different Color!
Guess what? John Dalton saw colors differently than most people. He couldn't tell the difference between red and green!
Because he was a scientist, he studied his own eyes and wrote down exactly what he saw and how he saw it. This was the first time anyone scientifically explained this kind of color blindness. Even today, in some languages, this condition is called 'Daltonism' after him.
How cool is that?
Dalton's Amazing Discoveries!
John Dalton didn't just stop at atoms! He was also a super weather watcher, keeping notes for over 50 years! He figured out rules about how gases behave, like how air pushes on things. He even came up with a special unit to measure how heavy atoms are, and it's still called a 'dalton' today. He was a true pioneer, making science more about numbers and less about just guessing.
