Common Examples
Salt, sugar, quartz, diamonds, snowflakes.
Fun Fact
Some crystals can create electricity when squeezed!

Meet the Crystal Family!

Imagine tiny building blocks that stack up perfectly, like LEGOs! That's kind of what crystals are. They are solids where the tiny pieces inside are arranged in a super neat, repeating pattern.

This pattern makes them look beautiful and sometimes even sparkly! Think of a perfectly stacked pile of sugar cubes or a snowflake's delicate arms. These are all examples of how nature loves to make things orderly and pretty.

Where Do Crystals Come From?

Crystals can form in many amazing ways! Sometimes, when hot, gooey rock from deep inside the Earth cools down very slowly, minerals can start to arrange themselves into neat crystal shapes. Other times, water carrying dissolved minerals can evaporate, leaving the minerals behind to form crystals. Even salt and sugar you eat are made of tiny crystals that form when water dries up!

Crystal Superpowers!

Crystals have special properties because of their neat internal structure. Some crystals, like quartz, can even create electricity when you squeeze them! This is called piezoelectricity. Other crystals can split light into rainbow colors, like a prism. Their organized insides also make them very strong and sometimes sharp, which is why some crystals are used to make tools or even cut things.

Crystals All Around You!

You see crystals everywhere, even if you don't realize it! Beautiful gemstones like diamonds and emeralds are crystals. But so are the salt you put on your food, the sugar in your cookies, and even the sand on the beach. Many electronic gadgets, like your phone or computer, use special crystals to help them work. Crystals are super important for making our world function and look beautiful!
