Imagine growing up in a busy city like New York! That's where Colin Powell was born. His parents came from a faraway island called Jamaica.

Colin went to regular schools, just like you! He loved learning and was part of a special club in college called the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. This is where he learned to be a leader and decided to join the army.

He became a soldier and worked his way up for many, many years!

Colin Powell was a soldier for 35 years! That's longer than you've been alive! He became a four-star general, which is a very, very important job.

He was in charge of lots of soldiers and helped make big decisions. He even led during tricky times, like when the U.S. helped Panama or when there was a big conflict in the Persian Gulf. He was like a captain of a giant ship, guiding it through stormy seas.

After being a general, Colin Powell became the Secretary of State. This means he was like the top diplomat for the United States, talking to leaders from other countries. He was the first African-American person to ever have this super important job! He even gave a big speech at the United Nations, a place where countries talk about peace. He was a voice for America on the world stage.

A Leader Who Wrote Books!

Even after his big jobs, Colin Powell kept sharing his wisdom. He wrote books about his life and what he learned about being a good leader. One of his books is called 'My American Journey.' He also loved to travel and give speeches, telling people about his experiences.

He even got special awards, like the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is one of the highest honors a civilian can get in the U.S.!
