Catherine the Great

Catherine the Great was a super important ruler in Russia, like a queen but even more powerful! She was born a princess named Sophia in a country far away. When she grew up, she moved to Russia and became empress. She ruled for a very, very long time, from 1762 to 1796. That's longer than many kids are old! She was known for making Russia a stronger and more exciting place.

Catherine didn't just become empress; she took charge in a surprising way! She became empress after a big change where her husband, Peter III, was no longer in charge. Catherine was very smart and had lots of ideas. She wanted Russia to be like other big, fancy countries in Europe. She invited people from all over to come live in Russia and helped build new cities and schools.

Catherine loved learning and wanted everyone else to learn too! She started the first school in Europe just for girls to get a higher education. Wow! She also helped build many new cities, like Sevastopol, which is a big port city today. She was like a super builder, making Russia bigger and better. She even helped Russia explore and settle places like Alaska!

Catherine was a big fan of new ideas and learning, which was called the Enlightenment. She believed in making things better for her country. She was a strong leader who made Russia a major power. Even though life was hard for some people, like farmers, Catherine's reign was a time of big changes and growth for Russia, making it a famous country around the world.
