Where is Russian America?

Russian America was a place way up north, near the chilly Arctic! It was mostly on islands and a long strip of land called Alaska. Think of it like a giant, cold playground covered in forests and mountains. The weather was super cold, with lots of snow and ice, especially in the winter. It was a wild and beautiful place, very different from where you might live!

Who Lived There?

Russian explorers, like Vitus Bering, were the first Russians to come here. They met the native people who had lived there for thousands of years, like the Aleut and Tlingit. The Russians built forts and trading posts. Life was tough because of the cold and the long distances. People had to be strong and clever to survive in this amazing, wild land.

What Did They Do?

The main reason the Russians came was for furry animals! They hunted sea otters for their super soft and warm fur, which was very valuable back in Russia. They also traded with the native people. Imagine trading shiny beads or metal tools for beautiful furs! It was a busy place for trading, even though it was so far away.

Did They Stay Forever?

Nope! It was very expensive for Russia to keep this land. It was so far away and hard to protect. So, in 1867, they sold Russian America to the United States. This big piece of land became Alaska! It's amazing to think that a place so far away was once part of Russia before becoming part of America.
