Key Facts
Where the Big Treasure Was Found!
Far, far away in the big, wavy North Sea, there's a special spot called the East Shetland Basin. This is where the Brent oilfield was hiding! It was so far from land, it was like being 116 miles away from the nearest town in Scotland. The water there was super deep, about 470 feet! That's taller than a playground slide, and even taller than a giraffe!
Digging for Energy Gold!
In 1971, brave explorers used a special boat called a drilling rig to look for treasure. They drilled the most northerly well ever! It was so cold and stormy, they had to wait a whole year to check if they found anything. When they finally did, they found SO much oil and gas, it was like finding a mountain of energy!
Giant Towers in the Sea!
To get all that energy out, they built four HUGE towers, like giant legs, right in the middle of the sea! They were called Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta. These towers helped them bring the oil and gas all the way to people on land. It was a super expensive job, costing billions of pounds, which is a LOT of money!
Saying Goodbye to the Giant
For many years, the Brent oilfield gave lots of energy to the UK. But like everything, it got old and stopped working as well. So, all the giant towers had to be taken down. The biggest boat in the world, even bigger than a football field, helped take them away. Now, the oilfield is resting on the sea floor.
