The creation of Jefferson Michael Pierce, or Black Lightning, by writer Tony Isabella and artist Trevor Von Eeden in 1977 was a deliberate effort to introduce more diversity into the superhero landscape. Isabella, having previously worked on Marvel's Luke Cage, was tasked by DC Comics to develop their first Black lead character.
