Beatrice Worsley

Imagine a time when computers were HUGE, like a whole room! Beatrice Worsley, who everyone called 'Trixie', was a brilliant scientist from Canada. She was the very first woman in her country to become a computer scientist. That means she was a pioneer, like an explorer, showing everyone that girls could be amazing at math and science too! She loved solving puzzles with numbers and machines.

Trixie was super clever and helped build some of the very first computer programs ever. She wrote the first program for a giant computer called EDSAC. Think of a program like a recipe that tells a computer exactly what to do. She also helped create a special 'translator' called a compiler, which helped another computer understand instructions. It was like teaching a brand new robot how to talk!

After her amazing work with early computers, Trixie became a teacher. She taught about computers and engineering at two big universities for over 20 years! She shared her knowledge and inspired many students. Sadly, she passed away when she was only 50 years old, but her work helped build the computers we use today.

Beatrice Worsley was a true trailblazer. She proved that women could be leaders in science and technology. Her work on early computers was super important because it helped create the amazing devices we use every single day, like phones and tablets. She was a brilliant mind who made a big difference!
