Key Facts
Why Were They Fighting?
Long, long ago, a powerful group called the Ottoman Empire was growing bigger and bigger. They were expanding into new lands. Some brave people from different countries, like Poland and Hungary, didn't want them to take over more places.
They decided to form a team, like a superhero squad, to stop them. This team was called the Crusaders. They wanted to protect their homes and their way of life from the growing empire.
It was like a big game of tag, but with much bigger stakes!
The Big Showdown!
The big fight happened on a chilly day, November 10, 1444, near a town called Varna. The Ottoman army was super strong, led by their Sultan. The Crusaders had their own brave leaders, like King Władysław III and a smart general named John Hunyadi.
They met on the battlefield, and the clash began! It was a fierce battle, with soldiers fighting with swords and shields. Imagine a playground full of kids all running and shouting, but this was much more serious!
Who Won the Day?
After a lot of fighting, the Ottoman army was victorious! They managed to defeat the Crusaders. This meant the Ottoman Empire continued to grow and take over more land.
It was a sad day for the Crusaders and their leaders. The battle was the last big try for the Crusaders to stop the Ottoman expansion. Even though they lost this battle, the fight for freedom and land continued for many years after.
Super Important People!
There were some really important people in this story! Sultan Murad II was the leader of the Ottoman army, though he wasn't the main ruler at that exact moment. On the other side, King Władysław III of Poland and Hungary was a key commander for the Crusaders.
Another super important leader was John Hunyadi, who was like the main general for the Christian forces. These leaders made big decisions that affected the whole battle and what happened next.
