Battle of the Monongahela

Long, long ago, in 1755, two big groups wanted to control a special place called the Ohio Country. One group was the British, and the other was the French with their friends. The British sent a big army, led by General Braddock, to march through the forest and capture a fort called Fort Duquesne. But the French and their allies were hiding in the trees, ready for a surprise!

As General Braddock's soldiers marched, they were walking in a long line, like a parade. Suddenly, the French and their allies jumped out from behind the trees! It was a big surprise, and the British soldiers didn't know what to do. They were in the middle of a forest, and it was hard to see who was shooting. The battle was very loud and confusing.

The main leader for the British was General Edward Braddock. He was a brave soldier, but he didn't win this battle. The leader for the French side was Captain Daniel Liénard de Beaujeu. He was very smart and planned the surprise attack. A young man named George Washington was also there with the British army. He helped the soldiers after the battle.

The British army was surprised and couldn't fight back very well. They had to run away! It was a big loss for them. Both General Braddock and Captain Beaujeu were hurt badly during the fight. General Braddock died later, and George Washington helped make sure he was buried. The French kept their fort, and the fight for the Ohio Country continued.
