Meet the Super-Sized Basilic!

The Basilic was like a super-duper, extra-large cannon from a long, long time ago! It was so big, it was called the 'royal gun' by the Greeks. Think of it as the king of all cannons! It was made of bronze, which is a strong metal, and it was super heavy. This giant was built to be a powerful weapon, ready to make a big noise and cause a lot of damage.

A Cannon's Big Adventure!

This enormous cannon had a bit of a journey! It was first offered to an emperor, but he didn't have enough money to build it. Then, a Sultan named Mehmed II said, 'Yes, let's build it!' It took a lot of metal to make, and when it was finished, it was about as long as a school bus! To move it, they needed lots of strong oxen and even more people pulling it all the way to a big city.

Boom! Smashing Through Walls!

The Basilic was famous for its amazing power. It could shoot a giant stone ball that weighed as much as a small car! When this cannon fired, it could break through thick stone walls. It was so powerful that it helped an army win a very important battle. But, it was also a bit dangerous for the people firing it because of the big kick it gave when it shot!

A Cannon That Needed Lots of TLC!

Even though the Basilic was super strong, it had its problems. After each big shot, it got very hot, and the people had to be super careful. They even had to put warm oil on it to stop it from cracking! It was so tricky to handle that it didn't last very long, only about six weeks, before it couldn't be used anymore. It was a powerful but a bit of a fragile giant.
